Wang Wen 惘闻 - 辛丑｜壬寅 Painful Clown & Ninja Tiger

Dalian post rock heavyweights Wang Wen return with their latest opus - their 12th in their two-decade plus career. As one might expect - it’s full of the band’s spellbinding and beautifully rendered compositions - soulful, beguiling, and dense in its atmospheric otherworldly pull. Whether it’s the horn-heavy playfulness of ‘Black Pill & White Pill’ (which naturally could double as the theme for a 70s police procedural) or the woozy organ that floats above the swelling tear-jerking finale 'Wild Fire', each track is assembled with the utmost care. It also features prominently, Xie Yugang’s vocals, whose gruff, tender yet world-weary tone, injects their lush soundscapes with a soaring emotional core. How it’ll stack up compared to the band’s massive catalog remains to be seen, but it just might be their most affecting release yet.

Sleeping Dogs - Blunt Razor

Instrumental groove masters Sleeping Dogs - a supergroup of Beijing-based indie musicians - return with their long-awaited debut LP, Blunt Razor, released with Spacefruity Records. Meticulously prepared with ingredients of Afrobeat, jazz, funk and hip hop with a simmer of psychedelic allure - it's rich in texture and flavor, yet never overwhelms. Akin to the aural pleasures of acts like BadBadNotGood and Khruangbin, there’s an intrepid spirit at the heart of their sound - making every track a pleasure to get lost in.

The Lighthouse Stranger 灯塔异客 - 问题之外

Swing punk with dirt proudly under its fingernails and a graininess that has been passed down from the Elvis era, Kunming’s The Lighthouse Stranger kill it on their riotous debut. Heavily influenced by The Stray Cats, and fronted by bassist Zhu Rui with the help of longtime friend Sun Haotong (as well as Wang Quran and Da Wen) the band inject their heart-beating rhythms and blues rocking stamina with working-class grit, psychobilly zest, and punk rock spite - all filtered through Da Wen’s grizzled pack-a-day vocals. Glorious.
